Welcome to Education In The Streets. This blog looks critically at labor and social movements of the post-seattle (and post Feb 15, 2003) era, (especially the academic labor movement and the struggles to organize service workers at global universities, as well as other struggles for social justice, and the state of academic institutions' investment and central role within the capitalist world system. I am a small-a anarchist from New York City currently living in New Haven, Connecticut and studying labor history and cultural theory in the undergraduate American Studies program at Yale University. Most of the stuff in this blog pertains directly to the ongoing struggles of workers and members of the New Haven Community to constitute a New Vision of postmodernized university and city (and hospital).

What is Education In The Streets? This blog takes its name from an action organized by the Undergraduate Organizing Committee during the weeklong strike of HERE Locals 34, 35, GESO, and 1199SEIU New England at Yale University and Yale-New Haven Hospital. On Thursday March 6, 2003, we set up six classrooms on College Street, in the middle of Yale's campus, in the middle of a large blizzard, where strikers, community leaders, and students taught eachother about what was at stake in the ongoing struggle for justice at Yale and in New Haven. Over 500 undergraduates walked out of classes, and, despite the weather, joined thousands of strikers to support their struggle and participate in the shaping of a new vision of the university and a new vision of undergraduate education. This blog situates itself firmly within the UOC's organizing, and tries to follow the path we began to chart on that day.
