Yesterday, 36 years after the assassination of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who had spoken so forcefully against imperial projects in Vietnam, the US placed a warrant on Iraqi cleric Moktada al-Sadr - a week after shutting down his publication. Qouth L. Paul Bremer III,

In a separate appearance, the top American administrator in Iraq, L. Paul Bremer III, labeled Mr. Sadr, an "outlaw" and said the 31-year-old cleric was trying to replace the "legitimate authority," news agencies reported.

"Effectively, he is attempting to establish his authority in the place of the legitimate authority," Mr. Bremer said, according to The Associated Press. "We will not tolerate this. We will reassert the law and order which the Iraqi people expect.

Yeah. Ok, clearly L. Paul Bremer III represents "legitimate authority." Just like the WMD committee is bipartisan, today is the beginning of Channukah, and the York-Broadway area needs more shoe stores and upscale boutiques that don't employ anybody.

Al-Sadr's response didn't have to strain too hard to point out the hypocrisy of Bremer's statement and the continued opccupation of Iraq.

"I'm accused by one of the leaders of evil, Bremer, of being an outlaw," he said in a statement read in Kufa, near Najaf, Reuters reported. "If that means breaking the law of the American tyranny and its filthy constitution, I'm proud of that and that is why I'm in revolt."

Unfortunately, as always, masculinist manichaean colonialist rhetoric by US imperial managers is generally backed up with massive firepower and a willingness to disguise and excuse civilian "casualties."

Things are going to get worse.
