Students at University of Maryland are facing discipline for asking Lynn Cheney questions. This is, of course, not the first time that students who speak out have suffered because of Cheney. Remeber her involvement with the ACTA "Defense of Civilization Fund and the report "Defending Civilization: How Our Universities Are Failing America and What Can Be Done About It," which criticized evil leftist american universities for trying to imagine alternatives to war in the post-September 11th world. My friend and Fracas co-founder Jim Casteleiro was one of the people targeted by this report. He rightfully wore it as a badge of honor. It's sad and ironic that Cheney's organization claims commitment to "academic freedom, excellence, and accountability on college and university campuses" and yet Cheney herself refuses to be held accountable for her own stalinist attempt to define, control, and police 'historical literacy' and not only restrict the "free exchange of ideas," which never existed in the first place, but vitiate and stigmatize efforts to bring some representation of a subaltern consciousness into the classroom. So i stand in solidarity with those who psuhed and pressured Ms. Cheney on the questions of gay marriage and reparations. Should the administrators and trustees of the university of Maryland attempt to pursue the kind of agenda that Cheney and ACTA advocate, we need to fight them every step of the way.
