Weapons Of Class Instruction IV

Yale Provost Susan Hockfield and VP for Development Charles Pagnam traveled to Hong Kong last week to visit welathy alumni and stregnthen Richard Levin's project of globalizing the university, soliciting donations from wealthy Chinese alumni.
"They are extremely gracious and interested in the University. They view the University as a real world treasure. They see Yale as a world leader."
(Parenthetically, if this is true:
Pagnam said he returned from the trip optimistic about Yale's financial health. The University is financially ahead of where it was at this time last year, he said.
"Our cash is looking much better than last year," Pagnam said.
then why do they need to lay off 50-80 workers?)
While Pagnam and Hockfield were galavanting around the global South renewing the university's ties with the wealthy transnational business elite, the university's own international students came together yesterday in an incredibly powerful speak-out to make public the ways in which the complicity of Yale's employment and research structures with Federal immigration restrictions makes such travel very difficult for them. These students and researchers called on the university to honor its obligations to its students and push for visa reform. In doing so, they made visible the possibilities of an other globalization, a many-headed hydra of connectedness, multiplicity, and solidarity which posits itself into being in opposition to Yale's disastrous corporatization and imperial restructuring and the role which the exploitation of international student researchers on h-1b visas plays in the labor structure of this globalized corporation.
At the GESO CC last night, I and the other UOCistas were struck anew by the urgency and the power of this fight. The violence which Yale is doing to the people whose work makes it work is violence done to all of their students. We're in this fight until we win.
