Sitting in SML, trying to get work done, think about organizing, and process the ups and downs of the last week. February 14th is fairly depressing for me, but the 15th marks a more important milestone, equally ambivalent but in a sense hopeful as well. Not sure if i'm being coherent, and, given the recent scrutiny of this blog by people (and i use the term advisedly) all too keen to label me a jew hater in their quest to obliterate any non-zionist forms of jewish identity and equate any kind of solidarity with the palestinian freedom struggle as support for suicide bombing of israeli civilians, i'm no longer sure how coherent i can afford to be. Once again i am seeing massive chaos on the horizon, as the stop $ shop contract deadline looms hours away, and the national movement to reshape the academic division of labor and bring social justice to academic workplaces continues to fight the Bush NLRB and opportunistic university administrators intent on continuing to exploit contingent academic labor at Penn, at Columbia, and at Yale, where one of the oldest and strongest of the organizing drives at private universities not only continues an uphill battle against an 11 billion dollar corporate institution through pathbreaking research and innovative alliances, but continues to win real victories along the way to recognition. Last february 15th, ten million people took to the streets to envision an alternative structure of world government, to constitute another superpower. That struggle will continue on March 20th, but it continues every day here at Yale, and on the streets of New Haven, New York, Toronto, Dakha, Mumbai, London, D.F., Jerusalem, Genoa, Montreal, Chicago, Johnannesburg, Seattle, and thousands of cities and towns in global networks of resistance that are constantly being forged and reforged. So have a happy valentines day (however much that holiday is inextricable from the capitalist reification of desire and attatchment and patriarchical constructions of love and posession.) But don't forget to observe February 15th too.  ¶ 2:57 PM
