NEWSFLASH: STOP $ SHOP SETTLES

Looks good.

[Local 1445 President Richard] Charette said a key union victory was to fend off proposals by the company that employees begin to shoulder some of their health insurance costs. The company will continue to pay for 100 percent of health insurance under the proposed agreement, he said.

"We're relieved and happy with this situation now. Nobody wanted to strike," said Mary Daley, a worker in the Dedham store.

The new contract affects 40,000 workers.

The 220-store chain is owned by the Dutch grocery giant Ahold.

The United Food and Commercial Workers Union also represents workers who have been involved in a four-month strike-lockout at grocery stores in Southern California.
