1971 REDUX

The Yale Daily News reports that Yale is once again attempting to build a thirteenth and fourteenth college.

Last time this was tried, it was halted because of massive community opposition. With the stregnth of the movement for a social contract this time around, i wonder how people will react.

The YDN reports on allegations of racial discrimination in the New Haven Fire Department.

is getting bashed in the campus press, which follows a certain pattern which seems to have emerged at Yale in the form of Francis Menton's 1972 op-ed column in the YDN "No Raises for Fat TA's" but which was most likely present far earlier at places like Michigan and Wisconsin where TAs began organizing and successfully won recognition in the late sixties and very early seventies. For more on the culture of hatred against PhD students, check out Kathy M. Newman's great essay in Will Teach For Food. I will not link any of the screed here because i don't really have the time to adress it adequately. I do want to call folks' attention to this great piece in the Daily Pennsylvanian by two professors, though.

Finally, the YDN's Bess Hinson reports on Kat's letter.

Yale spokeswoman Helaine Klasky said though she has not seen the e-mail, "as an accusation, it is quite unfair."

"[The administration] addressed [the intrusion] pretty aggressively at the time," Klasky said. "There were several meetings in trying to ensure free speech and that no hate crimes exist, and President Levin took it very seriously at the time and continues to take it very seriously."
