I just fell asleep for over an hour in the Sterling Memorial Library Reference Room. I'm glad that i don't drool.
My Somnolence was not for lack of a good read. Sven Lindqvist's
Exterminate All The Brutes employs the fictionalized travelogue and a meditation on Conrad's
Heart Of Darkness to investigate the colonial origins of European Genocide and locate the holocaust as a final application to Othered populations in the metropole of tactics first employed in wars of colonial domination. The jury's still out on how i feel about some of the claims Lindqvist's book makes, primarily because i haven't finished the book yet, but his reading of H.G. Wells's work in colonial context is fascinating. I am perturbed by the question of whether or not the narrative framework of the travelogue can have an anticolonial meaning or usage.
