Chaos in L.A. As the supermarket workers' strike (What thoughts i have of you, tonight, Emma Goldman) enters its second week, an unrelated strike by transit mechanics which is being observed by MTA workers, has further paralyzed Southern California.

Hundreds of thousands of commuters are stranded. Freeways are clogged. Grocery stores are scaling back hours. And the already ailing economy has taken another hit.

Meanwhile, the New York Times investigates the complicated role of the looming threat of anti-union mega-corporation Wal-Mart in the strike.
